The Government published a National Climate Change Strategy in November 2000. It detailed the policies to be implemented so that Ireland would meet its Kyoto commitment of limiting our rise in greenhouse gas emissions to 13% over 1990 levels by 2012. However since the the Government ditched two of the main planks of the strategy. They decided not to convert Moneypoint power station from coal to gas and it abandoned plans for a carbon tax in the face of opposition from IBEC. They have even stalled on plans to which there is no organized resistance such as the proposal to reform VRT and Motor Tax to graduate them according to the carbon emissions of the car. Now with the rise in Irish emissions approaching twice our Kyoto limit the Government has published a review of climate policy in July 2006. There is a public consultation running until the end of September. You can make a submission on our climate campaign wesbite - www.climatepledge.ie. You can send a ready-made submission using our suggestions or pick and mix and add you own ideas. It'll only take a few minutes and the more submissions the Government gets the more pressure there will be take serious action. The Government has promised a revised National Climate Change Strategy before the end of the year.
