May 24, 2019 View all news Friends of the Earth has written to its 26,000 subscribers calling on them to support the youth climate strikers today in any way they can [1].The environmental organisation has today launched a "Hands up 4 Solar Schools" campaign for schools interested in leading the energy transition and powering themselves with clean, renewable energy generated right from their rooftop. This follows a project where 5 schools will go solar in 2019, and 26 more will be chosen by the end of the year.Friends of the Earth Deputy Director, Kate Ruddock, said:"Bureaucracy and unnecessary barriers all but prohibit local renewable generation in Ireland, particularly solar power for schools. It's a slow, difficult and expensive process that should be a whole lot easier. These barriers need to be removed by Minister for Climate Action, Richard Bruton, if he is to truly respond to the calls for system change not climate change demanded by the students today."ENDSFor more information contact:Kate Ruddock, Deputy Director, on 086-151 3886Notes[1] https://www.foe.ie/blog/2019/05/24/if-you-do-one-thing-to-support-the-climate-strikers-today/[2] Details of Hands Up for Solar Schools are here: https://www.foe.ie/energy/solar-schools.html Categorised in: Climate Change Energy
