April 2, 2008 View all news More than 30,000 homes in Ireland took part in this year's Earth Hour, which took place between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday March 29th. Lights were also switched off at the Customs House, Four Courts, Aras an Uachtarain, the courtyard in Government buildings and Leinster House. According to Fintan Sly, Director of Operations with the ESB the event saw a drop in electricity usage of 50 Megawatts, a saving of about 60 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.Earth Hour 2008The event was a powerful reminder to politicians, business leaders and individuals that massive amounts of energy continue to be wasted, contributing to Ireland's high level of greenhouse gas emissions. Earth Hour was also a positive example of how ordinary people can take meaningful action on climate change.Worldwide, 24 cities were involved in Earth Hour 2008.
