April 10, 2025 View all news At the end of March we gathered our network groups together in one place for a collaborative day of introductions, skill share, campaign updates, and planning.Friends of the Earth Ireland is a member organisation of a wider European and international network, and we’re also a growing network of local groups across Ireland. We heard from each local group the work they’ve been doing and what they would like to do also. Education was a popular theme with a work focus, be it through regular hosting of topical guest speakers or a group book club. While each organisation had its own emphasis, from campaigning on biodiversity, renewable energy, or vacancy and its environmental impacts, it was inspiring to see activists connect and learn from each other’s experiences. There was also a theme of outreach and how each group intends to grow and reach people outside of our already existing networks. From film screenings to Cuppa for Climate sessions, groups were looking at ways to expand their membership and grow the environmental movement. After a break for lunch it was time to hear from our two campaign leads on our two current campaigns, Rosi Leonard on data centres and Aaron Downey on tenants’ access to retrofitting, followed by a workshop on the ‘pillars of change’ that are blocking progress for people and the planet.Overall it was a very successful gathering with much inspiration to take away and feed into the local work of each group while engaging with Friends of the Earth’s wider campaigns Celestine, a participant, said of the day -“It was great to be given the opportunity to meet other FOE-linked groups from around the country. It was a rare opportunity to share group plans and achievements with a roomful of deeply interested fellow-activists. Reactions were hugely supportive. We got insights into how challenges varied for groups in different parts of the country, and could see our own advantages and our limitations. A break for lunch allowed us to mingle and share information and experiences. The presentation around the Datacentres and Warmer Homes were helpful to those of us wishing to campaign on these issues, and the discussion groups threw up some interesting responses and helped us get better acquainted. All in all it was such a positive event, at a time when positivity is much needed. I hope we can keep meeting like this, at least once a year!”Grassroots movements are key to driving real change. Friends of the earth support local action groups to communities together, empower individuals to take action, and create the momentum needed to push for fast and fair climate action. If you like to learn more about Friends of the Earth network groups look here Categorised in: Friends of the Earth Activism Tagged with: Data Centres Energy Energy Poverty Faster and Fairer Climate Action
