Join us for 2 Film Screenings - 13th February

Friends of the Earth in collaboration with The Progressive Film Club are screening two documentaries - "Solar Mamas" and "Line in the Sand" on the 13^th of February from 2:30pm, New Theatre. 43 East Essex Street, Temple Bar.  Admission is free, but donations are welcome and will be dividied between the two hosting groups.

Ciara Kirrane - Friends of the Earth's Head of Climate Action will also speak at the event on Friends of the Earth's current campaigns and upcoming events. 

Solar Mamas - 2:30pm

Women make up half the world’s population and yet represent 70% of the world’s poor. They  work two-thirds of the world’s working hours, produce half of the world’s food, but earn only 10% of the world’s income and own just 1% of the world’s property. The Barefoot College in India attempts to target this imbalance by training impoverished women from around the globe  to become solar engineers.

Solar Mamas tells the story of Rafea, a Jordanian Bedouin mother who is given the opportunity to study at the Barefoot College. As a result, she is capable of bringing power to the most remote of places. However, familial and cultural traditions ensure that Rafea's jouney is not without hardship, as she is forced to risk everything, including losing her children, if she wants to complete the course.

Line in the Sand - 4pm

'Line In The Sand' is a collaborative multimedia project which shares the stories of Canadians directly impacted by the Northern Gateway pipeline, a $6.5 billion pipeline that would provide Canada with increased access to new markets in the Pacific Rim. Begun in the summer of 2012, the filmmakers travelled to various locations between Alberta and British Columbia, collecting testimonies from countless Canadians whose land, livelihoods, and cultures would be profoundly impacted by approval and construction of the 1,177 km Northern Gateway pipeline.
