We all know that Europe needs to stop building fossil fuel infrastructure yesterday to be able to keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees. We also know that we have limited financial resources to help us build a more resilient, sustainable future that puts care for people’s needs at its core. So why are new gas pipelines and LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminals being built all over Europe? And why is the EU still supporting and even giving public money to these fossil gas projects?!

The truth is, an outdated regulation is responsible for the promotion and political prioritization of gas as a fossil fuel across Europe, and this regulation needs to change. And now we have a window of time to change it.

The TEN-E (Trans-European Networks-Energy) Regulation specifically directs the EU to promote and fund fossil gas projects. These so-called ‘PCI (Projects of Common Interest) projects’ are unnecessary for energy security and risk locking Europe into decades of fossil fuel use. This law also doesn’t offer any assistance to many new renewable and energy efficiency solutions which could play an important role in the energy transition.

But now the TEN-E law is going to be revised. The European Commission is holding a public consultation and wants to hear what you think. This public consultation is part of a wider evaluation to assess the impact of the TEN-E regulation on Europe's energy networks and the progress of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs), including a consideration of how the regulation might evolve in the future. The PCI process is the process by which the controversial Shannon LNG project bypassed environmental and planning regulations.

Lots of corporate groups and vested interests (e.g. the gas industry) will be making submissions to this consultation (and lobbying the Commission in other, less transparent ways) so it’s important that the voice of civil society is heard through this consultation. A large number of submissions from individuals and local groups will make it clear that European citizens want a fossil-free energy future.
