March 12, 2024 View all news Commenting on last night’s positive votes at Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to adopt the Living Streets plan to create more pedestrian and cycle-friendly spaces in Dún Laoghaire town centre, Senior Campaigns Coordinator at Friends of the Earth, Sorcha Tunney said:“The adoption of the Dún Laoghaire Living Streets plan is a step in the right direction for faster and fairer climate action. Promoting active travel for daily journeys in urban areas has the real potential to cut pollution and reduce our dependency on dirty fossil fuels.“Local climate actions, like Living Streets in Dun Laoghaire, will play an integral role in lowering carbon emissions and bringing us closer to zero pollution. “We know that change can be difficult, and as we take such steps, we need to listen to and involve local communities. To ensure the success of living streets, DLRCC must ensure that local communities have improved access to affordable and reliable bus and train services, and that there is improved cycling and walking infrastructure. “The solutions to reducing Ireland’s emissions and averting climate breakdown are in our hands. We would like to see other county councils follow suit and develop similar active travel plans to support the reduction of our dependency on fossil fuel cars.” Categorised in: Climate Change Transport
