April 15, 2020 View all news Commenting on the the FG / FF framework document, Oisín Coghlan, Director of Friends of the Earth said:"The acknowledgement that 'the climate crisis is the most pressing existential crisis' is welcome. But that makes it all the more strange that there is no mention of what climate science is telling us we should do about it. And no mention of what we have agreed to do about it under the Paris Agreement."FF and FG are promising vaguely to do more to reduce emissions, but not to do enough to prevent climate breakdown, which is what counts. And they have given us no figures. And they are not promising to pass the new climate law that all parties have already agreed to. It's as if they are leaving all that for the smaller parties to propose in negotiations."We know from the UN that we need to reduce our emissions by at least 8% a year and that current plans fall far short of that. Any party entering into talks with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will have to insist that Ireland does it's fair share to fulfil the Paris Agreement and contain climate breakdown. And that the long-promised new climate law is passed in the first 100 days of the Dáil being back up and running".The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition will issue a full press release in due course.A summary of what we are looking for in the framework document and the programme for government is online here.
