Supporting the launch of Talamh Beo!

In support of the growing community of sustainable growers and farmers in Ireland, Friends of the Earth joined the launch of Talamh Beo, a new grassroots organisation of farmers, growers and land based workers, launched outside the Department of Agriculture where they presented an oak tree to Minister Creed.

In preparation for the launch action Friends of the Earth hosted two film screening and banner painting sessions to encourage citizens to stand with small sustainable farmers and call on the government to support the vision of Talamh Beo - a living landscape where people and ecosystems can thrive together.

2019 is a pivotal moment for the future of European policies on food and farming as the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) is being reformed. The CAP accounts for 40% of the overall European budget (each European tax payer contributes about €114 per year to the CAP).

This is the perfect time to draw attention to the food and farming system that European citizens really want and the events over the last few weeks have shown us that the Irish people are hungry for a change!

Triona Reid, Coordinator of our ‘Growing Together’ project, has been doing lots of work to bring the conversation on sustainable farming out to the public and into other activist and political spaces, such as the Young Greens annual conference where she encouraged young urban dwellers to get behind their small sustainable farmers and demand a fair food future for all.
