COP26 Global Day of Action for Climate Justice

View all news

The COP26 UN Climate talks are starting in just a few days! Activists from all over the world are getting ready for a Global Day of Action for climate justice on the 6th November, the first Saturday of the talks. No matter where you are, you can get involved too.

Grassroots groups and trade unions have organised a march in Dublin city centre at 12 noon on the 6th of November for the Global Day of Action in response to the call to action from the civil society COP26 Coalition in the UK.

The Friends of the Earth staff team will be joining this Dublin march and we hope you might join us! We’ll be meeting outside the Hugh Lane gallery at 12 noon so that we can all take part in the march together as a group. The march itself starts in the Garden of Remembrance which is very close by. You’d be really welcome to join us - it would be lovely to have the Friends of the Earth community all marching together! A similar demonstration is also being planned in Cork.

COP26 day of action for climate justice

Can’t get to Dublin or Cork? Don’t worry! There are demonstrations and gatherings being planned across Ireland for the Global Day of Action. We recommend getting in touch with your local One Future climate campaign group to see if a demonstration is being planned in your area - or to get involved in planning one with them. Sign up to the One Future email list here to get in touch with your local group.

No matter where you take action, don’t forget to take some photos to tweet or email to your local TDs. Hashtags being used on the day will include #GlobalDayofAction for #ClimateJustice and #COP26. If you fancy making some placards for the action day you might like to check out the COP26 coalition’s global demands and messaging guide here for some ideas on placard demands or slogans. Friends of the Earth International has also published some new briefing notes about COP26 here.

Beyond COP26, these global demands are very relevant to Irish climate action at a national level too. We need to stop the development of new fossil fuel infrastructure such as Shannon LNG here in Ireland. And as a rich country, Ireland should be doing its fair share of the global effort to limit warning to 1.5 and making reparations for the climate impacts we have already caused in the global South.

Want to follow COP26 in more depth? You could start by watching this COP26 101 video which has everything you need to know before the talks begin.

There are several upcoming events which might of interest too.

People from Friends of the Earth and Stop Climate Chaos who are travelling to Glasgow will be doing some short live Zoom sessions and live videos on social media to update us on what’s going on. If you’d like to join these live update sessions sign up to Stop Climate Chaos's special COP26 mailing list here to get email updates and Zoom links to join these sessions.

You might also like to attend some events in the COP26 Coalition People's Summit, which takes place from 7th to 10th November. You can view the full programme of events here - it includes online events that you can join from home.
