March 21, 2011 View all news Friends of the Earth welcomes the commitment in the programme for government to pass climate legislation. On page 60 of 64 it states "We will publish a Climate Change Bill which will provide certainty surrounding government policy and provide a clear pathway for emissions reductions, in line with negotiated EU 2020 targets."What is now important is that this legislation is prioritised and passed soon. Climate change is already happening and the need to provide certainty for how it is tackled is urgent. It is also very important that this legislation when passed is strong and is not diluted by vested interests. We saw oppostion to the idea of climate legislation from the business lobby earlier this year, Friends of the Earth will be calling on the new Environment minister not to be lead by the demands of vested interests who want weak regulation.
