As we entered 2025 the situation remained precarious but the previous Government ultimately supported further analysis into Ireland’s energy security and demanded that zero-carbon options must be assessed given the impacts of LNG. The new Programme for Government then made a significant commitment to take "decisive action to radically reduce our reliance on fossil fuels"/However, the new Taoiseach and Minister for Climate have now made statements that Government wants to proceed with a decision in favour of polluting LNG.Our fear is that Government is now jumping to support LNG on the back of outside pressures - from the fossil fuel industry, from certain Independents, or simply to cosy-up to the new pro-fossil fuel US president. Will you act now to ask the Government to reject polluting LNG?LNG can have devastating social and health impacts on the communities it touches. Think of communities in the US whose land, water and air is being contaminated by massive fracking operations. Or communities in Ireland faced with the prospect of having a polluting gas-filled terminal built on their doorstep. Will you act now to ask the Government to respect its own commitments and reject polluting LNG?If you’re interested, you can learn more about our work on LNG here. Check Your Message Message Subject: Edit the email subject line - (optional) Message Text: Dear (each target will get a separate, personalised email), As a supporter of Friends of the Earth, I am very concerned about statements you have made about progressing with a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal. It’s far from clear an LNG terminal would provide security benefits and if allowed, it would definitely delay moving away from gas which is crucial for preventing climate chaos. It would also mean higher gas and electricity bills, and potentially new levies, due to more costly gas infrastructure - all coming at a time when people are already struggling. The first energy decision you make must not be to turn away from climate obligations and to dismiss your Programme for Government commitment to take "decisive action to radically reduce our reliance on fossil fuels." I am asking that you now undertake a comprehensive assessment of major climate, economic and public safety risks associated with LNG, together with a public consultation. The Government’s Energy Security Package noted in 2023 that the best way to support energy security and climate commitments is to support a renewables-led, not fossil fuel-led, energy system and prioritise reductions in gas demand. The independent analysis commissioned by Government underpinning that Package showed that a commercial terminal like Shannon LNG may lock Ireland into polluting, expensive LNG for years to come. In 2023 the Government you were part of chose a "Strategic Gas Emergency Reserve", not a commercial terminal, as a preferred option provided it aligned with key climate-related conditions. Friends of the Earth highlighted the need for these to be put in place first, before any final decision on any form of reserve. However, the Government subsequently highlighted that developments in renewables, batteries and interconnection, together with the planned reduction in gas demand in the 2030s, may well make any LNG infrastructure an expensive white elephant. The energy Department therefore commissioned further independent expert analysis of the post 2030 period. This analysis is still ongoing but it is only one part. The Government must examine the potential costs and impacts on customers’ bills for infrastructure associated with any LNG facility. It must clearly address the risk of long-term polluting emissions and impact on climate and environment. And the Government must not lose sight of the fact that an LNG facility is at least as vulnerable to accident or attack as the pipelines the Government wants to back-up - nor lose sight of the resulting public safety risks. And any new measures responding to these issues must be subject to proper consultation. We are concerned that Government statements on the benefits of LNG as a backup are, at best, outdated. It seems that Government may now be making a decision without proper evidence and for all the wrong reasons - bowing to fossil fuel influence, or a back-room deal with certain Independent TDs, or ingratiating Ireland with a Trump administration hell-bent on getting Europe hooked on US LNG exports. Creating this reliance on US fracked gas imports and LNG does not have any place in the transition to a fossil free future which the state is committed to and risks undermining Ireland’s energy security. More gas is not the same as more security - it is the opposite: locking us into dependence on dirty dangerous gas at the very time we should be planning for a fossil free future. I do hope you will take urgent action on this issue and I look forward to hearing back from you. Yours sincerely etc, Edit the email text - (optional) Next Step - Preview your message → Categorised in: Energy Tagged with: Energy Faster and Fairer Climate Action Gas No New Gas Shannon LNG
